Travelling with your debit card in the Rotterdam and The Hague region

Welcome! In the Netherlands, travelling by public transport is easy. You don’t need to arrange anything in advance. Check in and out easily with your contactless debit or credit card and your mobile. This allows you to travel conveniently to the best places and sights in Rotterdam, The Hague and the surrounding area. Read how this works below.

Check in and check out: this is how it works

  1. Hold your debit card, credit card or smartphone  up at the card reader at the turnstiles to check in. If you are travelling in a party, everyone needs to check in and out individually with a different debit card.
  2. Have you arrived? Check out the same way. Always use the same card or phone you used for checking in.
  3. Payment is made automatically. The next day, the amount paid will show up in your payment statement with the description NLOV.

Q&A

Which debit or credit cards are accepted?

You can check in and out with:

  • a contactless debit or credit card with the Maestro, V PAY, Mastercard or Visa logo;
  • a smartphone with Apple Pay or Google Wallet, linked to a debit or credit card with the Maestro, V PAY, Mastercard or Visa logo.

Tip: remove the card you use to check in or out from your wallet. This ensures that the card reader recognises the right card and that you pay the right amount for your trip.

Can you also buy a ticket without a debit card?

Yes, you can buy a single ticket from the driver on the bus or tram with your bank, debit or credit card. Are you traveling by train or metro? Then you can also buy a ticket at a service point at the station. In addition, you can easily buy a ticket through the app of the transport company or carrier on your phone.

How does traveling with children work?

Children up to age 3 travel free of charge and do not need to check in or out. Children age 4 through 11 need their own ticket. You can do this with your own bank, credit or debit card on your smartphone, or you can buy individual tickets (from the driver or in the carrier’s app). It is not possible to check in more than one person from the same bank, debit or credit card.
